5 STUNNING FACTS ABOUT OLYMPIANS AND SOCIAL MEDIA

Check out these incredible stats about the athletes who are making waves online…

Neymar scores on social media
Not only did Neymar score the gold medal-clinching penalty for Brazil in last year’s Olympic football final, but he is also the most followed Olympian on social media. The FC Barcelona star currently has around 165 million followers across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Phelps tops the podium…..
again It seems winning five golds and one silver in Rio wasn’t quite enough for Michael Phelps – the US swimmer was also the most mentioned athlete on Twitter during the Games and posted the most-viewed Facebook Live video, which was watched almost 4 million times!

Olympic records fall in Rio
Athletes weren’t the only ones breaking records in Rio last year, however, with major social media platforms also seeing more traffic than any previous Games. In total, Facebook recorded 1.5 billion interactions from 277 million unique users, while Twitter saw over 187 million Tweets posted about Rio 2016, resulting in 75 billion impressions.

Snoozing Zhang hits ace online
Chinese table tennis star Zhang Jike garnered more than 400 million searches on Weibo during the Games – more than any other athlete. As well as winning singles gold and team silver, Zhang also caused a stir online when a photo was posted on Weibo that showed him fast asleep just 10 minutes before his match with Japan’s Koki Niwa!

Simone Zac = social media gold
Michael Phelps may have been the most mentioned athlete on Twitter, but a post by US gymnast Simone Biles received more retweets than any other during the Games, with a video of her receiving a kiss from Hollywood heartthrob Zac Efron being shared more than 150,000 times!
