International Skateboarding Federation To Merge With International Roller Sports Federation

The International Roller Sports Federation (FIRS) and the International Skateboarding Federation (ISF) have announced that they are intending to form a merger. The new organisation will be known as World Skate – pending approval by the September FIRS Congress.

The aim of the move is to ‘help to provide a more modern platform for the management of all skate disciplines’ according to the shared press release. World Skate would be led by a commission chaired by ISF President Gary Ream and will provide the sport of skateboarding, which secured a spot at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics alongside sport climbing, surfing and a number of new additions, with independent governance and management. Ream claims that the merger will, “seize the Olympic opportunity to properly maximise the development of skateboarding around the globe”.

The merger hopes to provide a standardised platform for the management of all skate disciplines going forward. Previously the sport was governed by a number of different organisations which FIRS President echoes when he says:
“We knew that to ensure the proper representation of skateboarding in Tokyo, it was necessary to involve the associations that represent the whole of skateboarding culture including top athletes, event organisers, community organisations, NGOs [non-governmental organisations], and industry advisors…only in this way the unique identity of the skateboarding community can be preserved and celebrated.”

A central HQ for the newly formed World Skate has yet to be determined.
